Tucked deep into the Nubra Valley of Ladakh lies this magical place that feels like it belongs to a different world altogether — Hunder. A place where deserts and snow-capped peaks meet, where double-humped Bactrian camels roam, and where kind-hearted locals make you feel instantly at home. We had heard stories about Hunder before, but nothing prepared us for the surreal adventure that unfolded when we visited . Let us take you through our journey, completed with wind, warmth, white sand, and wonder.
Crossing into a Himalayan Mirage
After a breathtaking drive through Khardung La, one of the highest motorable passes in the world, the landscape began to transform. The rugged, barren terrain gave way to unexpected greenery and then to something truly extraordinary — a cold desert resting in the heart of snow-capped mountains. This was Hunder.
As our vehicle entered the village, a sense of calm settled over us. No honking, no rush — just a wide open valley surrounded by jagged mountains and brushed by whispering winds.
First Encounter: The Bactrian Camels of Hunder
The first and perhaps the most unforgettable experience in Hunder was meeting the Bactrian camels. These double-humped beauties looked straight out of a Mongolian postcard. Hardy and gentle, they seemed unaffected by the chilly desert wind as they walked across the dunes. A local guide led them, wrapped in a warm jacket and holding a stick, walking with a quiet dignity.
We stood frozen for a moment, not from the cold, but from awe. Where else could you witness camels walking over sand dunes with snow-covered mountains in the backdrop? It was like nature had stitched together multiple ecosystems into a single painting, and we had stepped into it.
The camels had soulful eyes and thick, shaggy coats that protected them from Ladakh’s biting winds. We didn’t just see them — we connected.
Hunder’s Heart: The People
Beyond the natural beauty, what struck us most was the warmth of the people. From the owner of the hotel to the shopkeeper, the people of Hunder were grounded and generous, thus they deserve this mention.
Dancing Sand and the Evening Hues
Evening in Hunder brings with it a quiet kind of magic. As the sun begins to dip behind the mountains, the white sand dunes begin to glow. Shades of amber, rose, and lavender sweep across the landscape. It’s hard to believe you’re at an altitude of over 10,000 feet when you see golden sand ripple like waves beneath your feet.
We wandered into the dunes, camera in hand, heart full. Every photo we clicked felt like a postcard. But some moments couldn’t be captured — they had to be lived. The feel of cold sand against our skin, the distant chatter of tourists growing fainter as we walked deeper into the landscape, and the way the light kept changing, softening everything it touched.
One shot we took — a close-up of dried desert twigs against the blurred backdrop of mountains — later became one of my favorites. It is a reminder of the resilience of this place. Fragile yet surviving.

A Birthday to Remember
Hunder will always be extra special to me because of my(Srijita’s) birthday celebration that happened there. Celebrating so far from home, in such an untouched place, with the most handsome Mr. Husband (Nikhil), was nothing of magical.
Not only were we surprised to get a bakery in Hunder village, but we also had options to choose from. The feel of a warm room, the smell of Punjabi food, and the beautiful scenery in front is how I remember this birthday.
The Sandstorm Surprise
Just when we thought we had seen all of Hunder, nature decided to shake things up.
The next afternoon, the air changed. The winds picked up speed, the light dimmed slightly, and before we knew it, we were in the middle of a sandstorm. My first ever. Tiny particles of sand danced violently through the air, forcing us to cover our eyes and mouths.
Oddly enough, it wasn’t scary. It felt like nature showing off her raw power. It lasted only a short while, but the experience left a lasting impression. It reminded us that beauty and harshness often coexist in the most profound places.
Exploring the Valley
Our stay also included visits to nearby monasteries, stupas, and vantage points. We saw beautifully painted Buddhist stupas adorned with prayer wheels, set against dramatic backdrops of cliffs and cloud-laced peaks. We spun the wheels silently, whispering wishes into the wind, hoping they’d find their way into the universe.
Every corner of Hunder felt sacred — not just in a religious sense, but in a soulful one. It teaches you to slow down, to breathe deeper, to marvel more.
Goodbye is Never Easy
Leaving Hunder was hard. As our car made its way out of the valley, I looked back again and again — at the camels, the dunes, the tiny white homes. We were excited as our next stop was Pangong Lake, but for a while, the journey was quiet as we were taking back more than just pictures. We were carrying stories, feelings, and fragments of peace tucked into the folds of our hearts.
Final Thoughts
Hunder is not just a destination; it’s an emotion. It’s where cold winds warm your soul, where camels walk in snow-kissed deserts, and where sandstorms surprise you into stillness.
If you ever make it to Ladakh, don’t just visit Hunder — stay there. Spend your evenings watching the sun play over the dunes, talk to the locals, ride a Bactrian camel, and let the silence speak to you. It’s not luxury you’ll find here — it’s something rarer: authenticity.
And who knows? Maybe you’ll celebrate your next birthday in the middle of a white desert too.
